A key contributor in the Marketing department in our Calabasas office, the Product Marketing Manager is focused on the growth of the Acoustic Guitar product category as it relates to all public- and partner-facing communications, and is specifically responsible for defining:

  •  the end-user marketing strategies
  • product positioning
  • go-to-market strategies
  • sustaining marketing strategies
  • tactical planning recommendations

This role will engage heavily with a cross-functional team to execute these strategies. The Product Marketing Manager is the steward of the Acoustic Guitar category and is the strategic bridge between the product development group (Products), Marketing and Sales.

Strategic planning by the Product Marketing Manager will inform the functional planning and execution of marketing programs in the areas of Marketing Services, Channel Marketing, Artist Relations, Media Buying, Demand Gen, and Social Media management. The Product Marketing Manager will also be an important stakeholder in the generation of brand guidelines, content for social media, web production, advertising, email, artist relations targeting, dealer collateral, content marketing, video and multi-media, co-op marketing initiatives, live demos, events and training presentations. The Product Marketing Manager for Acoustic Guitars will be the key “client” of the Marketing Services group, providing essential direction and guidance in the development of successful marketing programs.

The Product Marketing Manager role is highly collaborative with Products and works shoulder to shoulder with the Product Management and Product Owners from a very early stage in a product’s development, through launch, all the way to the end of its life. As the ‘voice of the customer’ they provide both a reality check and sounding board. Success in this position will be highly dependent on the ability to foster alignment of internal perspectives (Products, Marketing, Sales) with market realities — in both the dealer and consumer arenas — as well as with current marketing trends and best practices.

Working within the Yamaha Guitar Group (YGG) Marketing department this role will be part of the Strategic Yamaha Brand and Product Marketing Team, as part of Yamaha Corporation, they work alongside each of the YGG brands, have a highly level of communication and seek opportunities to leverage those brand values.

  • Steward of the Acoustic Guitar product category
  • Build and communicate the Go-To-Market strategy for new product introductions
  • Develop sustaining marketing strategies
  • Develop marketing briefs
  • Create leading messaging and assisting in defining creative direction
  • Develop product & portfolio positioning
  • Develop specific measurable marketing objectives
  • Identify target customer groups
  • Plan, champion, and execute research and analytic programs to validate and test marketing strategies and executed programs
  • Liaise with others in Products, Marketing, and Sales in the execution of the above-listed responsibilities

Job Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years of successful product marketing experience with a focus on strategy and planning
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Marketing or equivalent experience preferred
  • International marketing experience is desired
  • Experience collaborating within cross-functional teams
  • Experience in the musical instruments/audio industry with at least some focus on guitar-related products
  • Some experience working on the executional or creative side of marketing is a plus
  • Must have a passion for making music and the empowerment of musicians
  • Must possess an understanding of contemporary marketing, being familiar with best practices, trends, common elements and work-flows
  • Must possess a commercial aptitude with a thorough understanding of B2B and B2C relationships
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal are required
  • Successful candidate will be highly quantitative and able to acquire and analyse data to develop market and customer insights
  • Detail and action-oriented traits are key for this position
  • Ability to be proactive in identifying opportunities and building momentum will be crucial for this position
  • High level working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in Mac OSX or Windows
  • Strong creative instincts and understanding of the creative process, even if you are not a “creative” yourself, is a plus
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with people of varied personality types and cultural backgrounds
  • Proficiency of any kind in the Japanese language and experience interacting in a Japanese business culture are a plus
  • Travel domestically and possibly internationally will be required
  • Ability to play/demonstrate and set-up an acoustic guitar
